Advert Description

Fine investment or collector's piece. Top condition. No tears, rips, or repairs to canvas or to original frame. Some wear on the carved wood and gilt frame. Colors are luminous. Shows the expected amount of craquelure on the canvas due to its 100+ years of age. Such craquelure can be used to determine the age of a painting (and to detect forgery, because craquelure is a hard-to-forge signature of authenticity).

Grand Antique Mall located in Cincinnati, Ohio is an original, signed, well-executed oil on canvas landscape by Scottish painter Arthur Melville (1858-1904), considered the most innovative and radical Scottish artist of his generations. Signed by the artist on the lower right hand side of the canvas. Circa 1890-1900.

Melville developed his remarkable color-sense -- so often noted as a brilliant feature of his work whether in oils or watercolor -- on his travels and adventures in Turkey, Egypt and Persia from 1880-1882.

Arthur Melville's dramatic composition features a forest and sky filled with birds at sunrise. Along a wooded road rides a man on a white horse that pulls a wagon piled with logs through a stream. Atop the logs is a man who secures the logs as they bump along the path. In the forefront is a woman, dressed in white, who waves to the loggers.
