AFRICAN CHEST-PLAYING STRING MUSICAL INSTRUMENT
I am unsure just what this instrument is called. It was bought by me in 1969 in Dakar, West Africa whilst serving on a ship as a navigating officer.
In the market place where it was bought, the seller, a lovely old white-bearded man, actually could play a simple but colourful tune, to which he sang!!!
To play it you pull the bottom of the instrument into your lower tummy and hold it outwards,..then strum away
It is totally original and not a mark on it. All the strings are in place and no doubt if you have any musical ability, could strum out a good tune on it today and entertain all around you!
The main body of the instrument is probably a fruit shell of some sort.
We live on The Broadway in Tynemouth, just minutes from the Metro Station and market.
If I can help further, please do not hesitate to call.
