SYNOPSIS: In teeming herds the buffalo roamed the West, and after them, killing, butchering and skinning, came the buffalo runners, tough, ruthless men in an ugly business. To the white men who followed the herds, the buffalo meant gold; to the Indians of the Great Plains the callous wholesale slaughter forecast misery and starvation, even death. So in desperation they too killed when they could, torturing and taking scalps in a vain attempt to defend their way of life. But to the four men of the Massengale outfit, and the Eastener who joined them in an effort to escape his past, the greater threat came not from the Indians but from the treachery and greed of other white men.... (The Buffalo Runners was awarded the Western Heritage Award as the best western novel of the year).
