car has now gone completley bonkers. difficult to start - revs drop off as soon as pedal is touched, coughs and splutters, no power at all so have taken it in to rover dealer to get it sorted out (hopefully) . after taking courage in both hands and with heart in mouth drove it 10 miles to dealers with no problems (aint that just typical ) will have to wait a couple of days for them to get back to me.
I have a 416Si 97P, with erratic revving. the revs keep dropping and then coming abck up again. The rev counter flicks all over the place !! Sometimes stalls completely. Local garage have had a look but say there is nothing they can do - they have checked the crankshaft sensor and thats OK. Now they recommend I get it to a Rover dealer. i'd be interested in the result of your visit to the dealer.
sorry not to be much help but i am one pi**ed off ex rover owner all i can say is that i reckon it needs a good decoke around the exhaust valves and never use cheap fuel. my problems all started after the head gasket blew and was replaced - maybe something nasty happened then but it was a very gradual decline until now it wont run at all unless i let it idle to normal temp and then it will run ok for some time - but if started from hot there is no power at all and all i can do is slip the clutch to keep the revs up and crawl home . have got to wait 6 weeks for the jazz to arrive good luck
i have been correcting the exact problem you are having for some time and in 99.9% of cases it is the same thing. The fuel pump system on these cars is a vacume type with the fuel pump located actualy inside the tank, (god knows why!!) anyway this is very prone to impact or shock damage even the usual humps in the road can destroy the functionality of the pump and cause, non starting, over reving, hoping, cutting out etc. Replace with a non genuine rover part (patern) and hey presto problem solved. I think it was a way of the old rover company to make a fortune out of its unfortunate buyers, but thats just my point of view of course

See above he's right, if a motor is "hitting" its time to get rid i'm afraid, but an engine alone from a scrappy will cost more than a whole replacement car that's in good order. It is also worth checking out e-bay for rover cars & rover bits, with the demise of rover group car & part prices are falling fast, i saw a 99 (T) in good order for less than £330 final price 15-05-05, (thats cheaper than most scodas).
Another P reg Rover 416 - my wife's, different starting problem though. Starter motor would not turn over, just a solenoid click. Couldn't find the problem. OK I thought, probably brushes or something, just push start it for now to get home. I've push started many a car over the years, not recently though - they got more reliable, thank God. Same old method - get car moving, ignition on, into gear (usually 2nd) and release clutch. Car either judders to a halt or engine starts up. Not this one though. I felt the slight extra drag when it went into gear (as expected), but when the clutch was released, nothing. No sound of engine turning over and car just kept moving. Couldn't believe it. Even made my wife push while I let the clutch in, same thing. Tried starter again and fired first time and been fine since - but can someone explain why I can't push start a Rover 416? Am I missing something, or just getting senile? Mij
To engage the starter programme on ecu you need to flip the key as you pop the clutch, (turn the key as if you are starting the car normaly as you lift the clutch) this will fool the ecu into running the starting programme. Hope this helps
A useful tip that I will certainly try next time. I am still baffled though. It's a standard manual transmission so I must be turning the engine over when in gear with the clutch engaged, and should feel the engine compression when pushing. The ECU only controls ignition and fuel doesn't it , not valve opening?
All I can think is that the gear was not really engaging even though it felt like it was, or maybe it dropped out as soon as the clutch was released. Might this perhaps happen if the starter pinion was jamming the engine? Guess I now have to get the starter off and strip it down anyway. Any tips there?
i've had a problem with my 416 sli it just doesn't start i try and try but nothing. the dealer has changed the speed sensor and the car after 15 days apperaerd to have the same problem they have said something about the ecu but i don't no ??? Also if i start the car and it doesn't start, if i wait to the next morning it will start withno problem Does anyone know what could be my problem??? Thanks
on a few times and is overheating again need some advice on what to do next believe it or not i actually like the car and do not really want to scrap it just yet!!! body work is in excellent condition im still driving it around but daily on short journeys but sometimes needs a bump start to get it going. i think its probably water in the oil is there any hope for it???
