This is San Simon....rebel saint of the Guatemalan Maya peoples.
He is not a conventional saint....he smokes puros (cigars) and drinks guaro (a indigenous alcoholic drink).
The native peoples of Guatemala stand these figures in Church and bring offerings of cigars and alcohol they make themselves....and put candles on them.
The statue is made of wood and is 19" high. My wife is Guatemalan - although not a Mayan - and we visited her family there in the 1980s. We bought this in a market .... whether it is original I couldn't say, but even if it was created as a tourist piece it is a good example of folk art and it is approx 30-40 years old. We paid what can be described as a 'healthy price' for it!
