Rare Pears Christmas Annual 1920 poster print portrait of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales (who later, briefly, became King Edward VIII) from an original painting by Vandyk.
Still has the original printed title underneath the picture.
Good/fair antique condition. Collectable.
Age-related yellowing to the paper. All edges & corners dog-eared. Left edge of the paper viewed from front tatty with 7cm tear in left hand border & top left border corner is torn. 2 creases across width of poster dating from its inclusion as a chromolithographic presentation print with the famous Pears Christmas Annual in 1920, produced by the Pears Soap company.
It is a colour print of a portrait of HRH The Prince of Wales (later to briefly be King Edward VIII who abdicated in 1936) in British Army uniform, the original was painted by Vandyk.
Central portrait still in good condition - creases & dog-eared edges may be less noticeable if it was trimmed & framed. Title printed under picture: "His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales", "Reproduced for presentation with Pears Annual by permission of His Royal Highness". Below portrait on the right is "Portrait by Vandyk", on the left is "One of two plates presented with Pears Annual 1920". Above portrait on right is "Printed in England", on the left is "Copyright".
A rare example of its kind, it has been stored away for many years.
Measures approx 60.5cm long, 48cm wide (central portrait measures approx 40cm long x 30cm wide).
Pears Soap issued a large format Christmas Annual 1891-1925 containing adverts, articles, Christmas stories & 2-4 large presentation prints (chromolithographic reproductions of original paintings specially purchased by Pears). Given away free with the Christmas annual, the large prints were designed to be framed and hung on the wall and are now considered highly collectable.
