Advert Description

Beautiful, elegant toilet/ dresser/ swing mirror, made by The North American Furniture Company, who were active between 1910 and 1937 in Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada. The more widely known North American Chair Company opened in a new factory close by in 1912. This is a rare piece.

4 small turned bun feet, reeded base, reeded side scrolls, decorated metal twist-rings, pierced and carved top in Fleur de Lis and scroll design. Original hardwood backboard and nails, original label still in place though partly illegible.

I think this is figured maple - as it’s native to Canada, it would make sense. It could possibly be yew, but I don’t know how common yew was in Canada at that time and I do know they relied heavily on native woods. The patina is beautiful, rich and deep. This has been a loved mirror!

The base appears to be solid. The scroll Fleur de Lis top is clearly veneered, as are the the sides of the main scroll arms, I can’t determine if the main reeded fronts and backs are, they could easily be solid.

Original glass, evidenced by the visible sparkle under the glass. There are a couple of minor imperfections in the glass, which I’ve tried to photograph, without much success - just a couple of faint surface lines, only visible when the light hits the glass at precisely the right angle, and I hadn’t spotted them (despite scrutiny) until I took it outside to photograph.

Please see photos for visual description. This gorgeous piece measures approx 20 - 16” (base) or 51x17.5cm,
the glass is 17 x 11 1/4” or 43.5x29cm, and stands 25” or 64cm tall.
