Dickens wrote part of "David Copperfield" while vacationing at Bonchurch on the Isle of Wight. This book examines the scenes from Copperfield and the character of Mr. Dick in the light of the topology and inhabitants of the Island. The hypothesis evolves that the prototype, and at least the name, came from the Dick family of Bonchurch and, perhaps also, the prototype of Miss Haversham was a Miss Dick from Bonchurch.
