Austrian Family Bible Of The Toe(s) Family Of New York, Dated 1617

I am proud to offer for sale this fine early 17th century family bible which has certainly travelled around the world, and can tell a few stories to say the least.

The original owner of the bible was a North Yorkshire minister called Daniel Squire Toe(s) who was resident minister at St Mary's church in Whitby between 1598, until his death in 1624. His father Robert Toe(s) was also minister at the same church from 1575 to 1598.

During or around 1610 Daniel Toe(s) was involved with the Puritan movement in the depths of Upper Swaledale, around Muker and Reeth and further a field to the West and East Riding's of Yorkshire,
in particular Austerfield, where a certain William Bradforth lived who also had strong connections with the Puritan movement.

The story of the pilgrim fathers is well told, and i do not want to re-step over old ground with the story of the journey to Belgium and landing in New England in 1615 etc.

Mr Daniel Toe(s) in 1616 travelled to Austria with a group of puritan's to hide away from the persecution he had faced with disagreements with the church of England, earlier in 1613.
Daniel Toe(s) settled in a village called Wolfgang, and later preached at the local church where he was later given this bible, which is for sale. The story goes on,......

But if we move on a few years, Daniel Toe(s) travelled to New York, or also known as New Amsterdam and stayed with another Yorkshire family by the name of Broadbent, who in turn lived at a place called 'Ryters House', according to the bible for sale .

The bible for sale has many pages listing the pedigree of the Broadbent family, see images.
The Broadbent's also used the name of Bradforth, again listed in the bible for sale. Without going into too much detail, the Broadbent's seemed to have originated from the North and West Riding's of Yorkshire etc...

To conclude the story on Daniel Toe(s). He preached at the main 'Dutch Reformed' church, now the site of Battery Park until 1619, returning to Whitby in 1620.
