Our tough overland camper van is regretfully now for sale.
The base vehicle is an ex German Army 4x4 1017A made in 1986. The odometer reading is less than 160,000 kms mostly because the vehicle was stored for many years by the Army.
With good maintenance 1017A's can cover perhaps a 1,000,000 kms. It has no electronics and is simple to maintain (ideal in remote parts of the world).
Spare parts are readily available but this sale includes a number of useful and valuable essentials ranging from a new turbo to a radiator cap.
The vehicle was obtain from the Army in Germany where the box for the living quarters was made and installed on a torsion free sub chassis by Fuess.
Other modifications included two new fuel tanks (total 750 litres) with an additional fuel filter. The vehicle was imported to the UK where the interior was constructed in 2007 to a professional standard using high quality equipment. In addition there are two spare wheels, along with special equipment to make changing wheels fairly easy.
The design allows independent travel for 3 weeks or more and to provide accommodation suitable for extended travel for months or years. So there are very large tanks for fuel and water, lots of storage, and alternative systems to provide more than one method of maintaining essential functions.
One feature is a comprehensive control panel with each electrical circuit separately switched by its own circuit breaker. The batteries are charged through a computer controlled split charge system, solar panels, or a landline and worldwide mains charger. Another feature is the multiple source heating system for the accommodation.
There is a Webasto diesel air heater, a Webasto diesel water heater which can be used to heat the hot water tank, supply additional air heating through a heat exchanger and can also be used to preheat the engine. There is a separate engine cooling system blown air heater used to warm the accommodation while driving and to provide hot air for drying clothes.
This vehicle has been through the Sahara, across the steppes of Asia, over the Himalayas, visited the Far East and spent a long time in Africa. Just imagine where you could go with a vehicle like this!!
The Specification is too long to include here. Please contact me for more details or the webpage where there are more photos.
