Oxfam Music & Art Exeter (featuring Gerald Moore on piano, Schwarzkopf with soprano vocals, conducted by Geoffrey Parsons). Elisabeth Friederike Schwarzkopf made her operatic debut, at the age of 22, in 1938, when she played the part of a Flower Maiden in Richard Wagner's 'Parsifal'. She continued to sing at the Deutsche Oper for four years, leaving the city of Berlin only once during that time (to perform in Paris in 1941, in a Deutsche Oper production of Die Fledermaus, by Johann Strauss II). She left Deutsche Oper in 1946, and then worked with a Viennese company for a further four years. By this time, she had become a world famous soprano. She married Walter Legge, one of the most respected names in the classical music recording business, in 1953. The same year, she became a naturalized British subject. She was made a Dame of the British Empire, DBE, in 1992. On this album, from 1971, Schwarzkopf sings a variety of works, by various European composers ; from German composers Robert Schumann, Richard Strauss , and Johann Loewe ; to Hungarian, Franz Liszt ; to Austrians, Franz Schubert & Gustav Mahler ; to Norwegian Edvard Grieg ; to the Polish pianist-composer Frederic Chopin.
