The Golden Shakespeare: An Anthology

This advert is located in and around Lymington, London

Advert Description

Oxfam Bookshop Lymington First edition 1949. Printed on fine paper which manages to fit 700 pages of text into a 2.5cm thick volume. Maroon cloth hard covers with gilt titles on the spine and a gilt crest on the front. Light edge wear. No inscriptions, binding is tight, text appears to be little read. A scholarly anthology of extracts from Shakespearean plays in "more or less" chronological order of their composition with the Sonnets (dating disputed) to the rear. Logan Pearsall Smith (1865 - 1946) chose this approach of presentation for “the growth in Shakespeare's mastery of language, of poetry, and of character-creation" becomes most clearly apparent when his plays are read in the order they were written. Fine condition. See Oxfam website for delivery information
