Full Latin lyrics are printed in the album gatefold-sleeve's middle four pages (sample Photo Four). Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) originally planned to involve many of his nation's foremost composers, in the creation of this Requiem Mass, in order to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of his peer, Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868). Due to various red tape, authority-non-co-operation, financial restrictions, etc, this plan fell through. Verdi was then approached to compose an operatic work, to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal, by a theatre in Cairo, a work that became his legendary "Aida" opera, plus he also composed a string quartet in early 1873. After this, there was no productivity for some time. It was another peer's passing, namely that of Alessandro Manzoni (1785-1873), that finally moved Verdi to compose his Requiem Mass ...
