Oxfam Shop Ulverston John Dicks, undated but circa 1840. Paperback. 124 pp plus adverts. Eugene Aram is a melodramatic novel by the British writer Edward Bulwer-Lytton first published in 1832. It depicts the events leading up to the execution of Eugene Aram in 1759 for murdering his business partner. Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton PC (25 May 1803 – 18 January 1873), was an English novelist, poet, playwright, and politician. He was immensely popular with the reading public and wrote a stream of bestselling novels which earned him a considerable fortune. This is one of his earliest novels, first published in 1832. Our copy is circa 1840, an unusual paper wrap copy published by John Dicks, London, a "People's Edition", in the Dicks' English Novels series - No. 9. - price sixpence. With 8 illustrations by M W Ridley. Adverts for other novels in the series includes Charles Dickens - No 60 Pickwick Papers, No 84 Nicholas Nickleby, No 85 Oliver Twist, No 86 Barnaby Rudge. "Shortly to be ready: The Old Curiosity Shop." From which we deduce circa 1840. Book condition : Fair. The spine is torn, tears to front cover, chipping to edges. Binding still tight.
