I have read that only 4 yellow Excels were built out of around 2200, so it is pretty rare.
The car is fitted with a Toad Cat 1 alarm and immobiliser, Pro-Tech (hand built) adjustable shocks all round, and the exhaust system is stainless steel with the exception of the O/S/R silencer.
Since purchase I have done or had done the following: replaced the head lining
New battery
New clutch, release bearing, slave and master cylinders, clutch fork and associated seals etc.
New Speedo cable.
4 new Tyres â Falken ZE512.
Crankshaft front and rear oil seals, cam cover seals, various other oil seals around the engine.
New rear brake pads.
Cam belt change (the tensioner was overhauled while in a previous ownership).
Custom fitted mats front and rear.
All fluids and filters completely changed including fuel and cooling system flushes.
Protective seat covers in a fetching shade of yellow â please be assured that the seats below are in good shape.
I have read read that the chassis on Excels is galvanised but I took the precaution of also having the chassis Dinitrol treated.
The engine had to come out for the clutch to be replaced so it was worthwhile having the other bits and pieces done as preventative medicine.
Most recently for the MOT and service, new spark plugs were fitted, the twin Dellortos were thoroughly cleaned out and two sections of stainless exhaust replaced some rotten mild steel parts.
I have receipts for all the parts but not the labour, £2200 spent on maintenance, preventative treatment and care. Car comes with full service history, service manual ( very rare) in a file 4" thick in all the years i have had sports cars i have never had a fuller history
The car runs well, with pleasantly direct and well weighted power steering, good retardation from the brakes, accurate gear change from the Toyota box, no synchro probs, no whining from the rear axle, or overheating from the engine nor any rumble or rattle â the fan comes in on schedule, and I would not hesitate to drive anywhere in the country in it.
The ride is supple and pliant yet cornering speeds can be high â such is the Lotus handling prowess.
The faults with the car are listed below:
Interior is beige and although I have read cleaned it, it remains a 22 year old beige interior!
all MOTS combined with the tight feeling driveline and partial history would support the mileage I believe.
All in, a pretty genuine old Lotus which should give its new owner some fun as a hobby car for a few years to come yet and not hold many, if any, surprises. If you require more pictures of any areas please drop me a note and I'll furnish you with them. Guide price from classic car mages for an Excel in condition 2 is around £3-6K. I'd rate this car as condition 2+ . I
