Advert Description

FOR SALE - Antique Rental Telephone. - £90
We know almost nothing about this polished wooden telephone, given to me 50 years ago, except that it was a rental
model for internal use, with 15 buttons. On the top is the name Telematic - Property of Telephone Rentals (Notts and
Yorks) Ltd. Also there's a logo of the Telephone Manufacturing Company with the name "New System". This may date it to the very earliest telephones in England, around 1906. To quote a history of the telephone website: "The New System Private Telephone Company was one of five companies operating telephone services in the UK at the time. At the turn of the century these companies faced immense difficulties in convincing executives of the need to change from speaking tubes to telephone wires. New System's new principle of payment by rent embodied the responsibility for maintenance of the service, without which the subscriber might eventually cease to enjoy the
new speedy communications facilities".

This telephone is a very rare item, possibly 108 years old, and suitable for an enthusiast's collection. We can't even find this in the photographs owned by Telephone Museums !
