The house is in St Calais du Desert, in an area of Normandy called Suisse Normande (Swiss Normandy) and is about 100Km from the coast. There is no bus service, no bar, no boulangerie and a car is essential for exploring, shopping etc. The nearest small town (supermarket, fuel, bars, estate agents, bakers etc) is Pre en Pail, about a ten minute car journey. The nearest big town is Alencon and Le Mans is about a one and a half hour drive. There is an exquisite small and famous spa town called Bagnoles de L'Orne about 20Km away. Mayenne and Laval, a little further afield, have wonderful medieval quarters and great restaurants. The nearest chateau to my house is at Carrouges, about a fifteen minute drive away. There are at least three other English households in the village, an English-run charity shop in Pre en Pail and lots of other English households in the surrounding villages. St Calais itself is a very well-kept, pretty village and the villagers are very friendly.
