I'm selling after 8years of living and building the boat to move onto land. It would make an ideal boat for first time boaters and couples. Easy to manoeuvre and small enough to turn 360 freely without having to travel miles to a winding hole.
It's an unique boat called Detritus. It's 36 foot long. Built in the 80's by Hancock and Lane, known for their well built boats in British steel. It's never needed plating and the hull has been well looked after. Only last year was it blacked and had four new anodes.
When i bought the boat it was poorly insulated and arranged awkwardly. So i started again back to a metal shell. The interior metal was painted with special paint and insulated with kingspan insulation.
Inside has been mostly made from recycled and repurposed materials, everything has a bit of history to it. For starters there are two Huge 19th century Church doors from Southern China on either side of the boat. The wood that makes the floor and kitchen is from the stud walls of a Victorian post office. The multi fuel stove was built between 1870-1905 in Scotland and the hearth that it stands on was the tiled entrance to a Victorian sweet shop. Cast iron drain hoppers used as lights, Church pews face the underside of the seating. Beams that originated from a decommissioned ship in 1720 that was turned into a barn, torn down a few years ago and returned to life on the water...
The engine is a water cooled BMC 1.5 awesome little engines that are easy to work on and maintain. A few years ago it contracted diesel bug. I made an inspection hatch in the fuel tank so i could clean it manually, which makes everything so much easier should it ever need it again. It also had a new diesel injector pump, filters etc and it's been fine ever since and has never let me down.
Perhaps the best quirk of the boat is that the engine sits in the middle of the boat and is hydraulically propelled. You can actually have conversations whilst navigating the canal. Often i'm asked if the boat is electric. On the inside the engine noise is quite apparent.
It's also set up with a 100w solar panel, batteries, inverter and plenty of plug sockets.
The Exterior... i've not done a great deal, i removed the paint above the water line and blacking on the Hull to leave a Patina that has been treated with Owatrol. I've started working on the top half, with the same idea. But if i'm selling Detritus maybe you'd like to make your mark.
Boat Safety was renewed with no problems earlier this year and expires 30th May 2022
If you're new to canal living i'm happy to show you how to Drive, use locks, twist stern glands and turn grease nipples and the normal boat things you have to do regularly.

It is currently on the west end of the Kennet and Avon Canal
