Advert Description

Red Morroccan leather and gilt bound series of the culturally important Cassell’s Illustrated History of England, published by Cassell, Petter, and Galpin, Ludgate Hill, EC.; and 596, Broadway, New York.

Despite there being no printing date given in these books, I can date them precisely to between 1858 and 1878:

From 1851-1855, John Cassell was printing at La Belle Sauvage Yard, not Ludgate Hill.

By 1855 he was bankrupt, so from 1855-8, George Petter and Thomas Galpin took over as the Petter and Galpin printing firm, published by W. Kent & Co.

In 1858, Cassell rejoined, renaming the company Cassell, Petter, and Galpin, as seen in each of these volumes.

In 1878, the company became Cassell, Petter, Galpin and Company with the addition of another new partner, Robert Turner.

For around 140 years old, these books are in fabulous condition. Please see photos of each (spine, covers, selected pages) for details, but there isn’t anything major to report - please ask for more details, there’s a word limit on here!

Very, very, heavy at over 12.5kg unpacked, but can courier at cost if required and if you can’t collect.

Regarded as culturally important, this work is still in print today. I haven’t been able to find any of this age, in this format, anywhere else online, so I would regard these as rare. Loads of repros about, not so many originals.

Packed with illustrations. Marbled page ends, marbled front & rear inside covers. Fully indexed.

Please ask for more pics, any other details.

Thanks for reading my ad - I look forward to hearing from you soon!
