Advert Description

Oxfam Music & Art Exeter (featuring the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent). The legendary Russian composer, Pyotr Tchaikovsky (1840-93), had completed his Fourth Symphony in 1877. Then, aside from the "Manfred" symphonic poem (sometimes referred to as an unnoficial symphony, within his canon), which the composer completed in 1885, no new symphony came from his pen, for the next eleven years. By June 1888, Tchaikovsky was corresponding with the benefactress of his Fourth ... he wrote, that he was intending to write a symphony, following some difficulty in finding inspiration ; in August that year, it seemed that he had completed what would become known as the official Fifth, but was surprisingly lacking in any signs of jubilation. Indeed, surprisingly, Tchaikovsky never did reach a state of jubilation, nor celebration, on the subject of his Fifth Symphony : A symphony which was regarded by many critics, as the best constructed of all the official six symphonic works. For one, the British critic E Newman thought that it was superior, in many respects, to Tchaikovsky's much-cherished Sixth Symphony, due to the Fifth producing "a feeling of unity that irresistibly suggests one central controlling purpose" and that "this is so, is mainly due to the recurrence, in each movement, of the theme with which the Fifth Symphony begins." Side One : Symphony No.5 in E minor Op.64, by Tchaikovsky :- 1) I Andante. Allegro con anima 2) II Andante cantabile con alcuna licenza. Side Two : Symphony No.5 (conclusion) :- 1) III Valse : Allegro moderato 2) IV Finale : Andante maestoso : Allegro vivace. Records graded visually to RRPG grades (record/sleeve) EX-/EX-.
