Oxfam Bookshop Tavistock Although a children's novel, Charles Kingsley intended "The Water Babies" as part satire in support of Charles Darwin's "The Origin of Species". The book has many themes including Christian redemption, child labour and how England at the time treated its poor. Originally written in 1862–63 as a serial for Macmillan's Magazine, it was first published in its entirety in 1863. 1927 reprint of 1908 original. Pictorial green cloth boards, no dust jacket. Spine slightly worn on sides. Endpapers foxed. 284 pages with 12 detailed colour plates, headpieces and illustrated endpapers by Margaret W Tarrant.
