Unlike the Songye of other regions who were influenced by the Luba, by the Western colonists and by other groups, the Songye of the East, who are the most self-sufficient, were not submitted to any influence, that is why we can find among them, the most purest pieces, in a stylistic point of view. The Songye of the regions of Katanga and Kasai in Congo are closely related to the Luba, both from a cultural and linguistic point of view. The spirits of the dead, Mikishi, whether benevolent or malicious, were of great importance for the Songye. They played a vital role in their daily lives. Little and large fetishes, Mankishi (singular Nikishi), used by individuals or entire communities, were ineffective until their activation with Manga, mixtures of magical substances, applied by experienced specialists, who had mystical wisdoms, necessary to manage the spirits. 22683507
