Rev. E. Gilliat. The Dragonnades or Asylum Christi. 1881. Sampson, Low. 461 pp. Very good condition for its age, spine a little tender and occasional foxing but bright green cloth covers, with gold title of Asylum Christi and decoration of crossed arrows on front cover. Harrow School Book Plate of December 1880 indicating Geraldo Yeo as the Winner of 1st Prize in Latin and Greek.
Gilliat was an Assistant Master at Harrow School. He wrote much historical fiction in the late 19th century. Thr Dragonnades (or Asylum Christi) is an early work first published in 1877. There is a short Introduction by the Author establishing the historical authenticity of this story about a Huguenot family and set at the time the French Wars of Religion. More a sedate successor to Scott than a follower of Henty, but quite a distinguished example of the genre though now with more appeal to adults than the schoolboy.
