Published by T. Longman, et al, London (1795)
Two volumes bound in brown leather with with gilt lettering and lines on spines. Unfortunately the top of Vol II spine is missing and both are cracking away from book. Gilding to ends of pages. Slight sign of cracking to marbled paper joining covers and end papers. Pages clean and tight, a little bit of browning by age.
John Milton's (1608-1674) famous pair of epic poems in a late 18th century edition. Volume 1, dated 1795, with engraved vignette title page & frontispiece. Volume 2, dated 1796, with letterpress title page & frontispiece, plus engraved vignette at final page. Frontispiece in each volume, 3 plates in volume 2. Curiously, volume 1 has no letter-press title page (just the engraved vignette title page), apparently as issued. Includes a life of John Milton by Elijah Fenton, criticism on Paradise Lost by Samuel Johnson, & a note on Milton's moral character from Mr. Hayley's Life of Milton. In addition to Paradise Lost + Paradise Regained, this collection includes Samson Agonistes, poems upon several occasions, sonnets, psalms, a Latin ode to John Milton by Joannes Baptista Mansus (Poemata), & select notes on Paradise Regained. With advertisement to volume 1, & preface to volume 2. Paradise Lost was first published in 1667, & Paradise Regained was first published in 1671.
