Advert Description

Oxfam Bookshop Cotham Hill

Based on a wealth of historical sources, including archive material, unpublished autobiography, contemporary newspapers, books, journals, and reports, this book elucidates and analyses the development of a modern welfare system in England prior to the establishment of the modern welfare state.

Focusing on the development and application of public health programmes and their significance and implications, it raises large issues such as the relation between a state of war and national interest in protecting the health of the next generation. It also tells us much about the early twentieth-century concepts of the role of women as mothers and the position of children in Edwardian health politics.

War is Good for Babies and Other Young Children will be of great value to students, teachers, and researchers in the history of medicine, child welfare, and social history.

This has a bookplate on the first (blank) page, and an old pricing sticker on the front flap of the dust cover. Both dust cover flaps have been treated with transparent plastic, giving a slight yellow appearance but is in otherwise very good condition throughout, with pages clean and unblemished.
