Oxfam Bookshop Witney

An interesting selection of seven articles by a number of writers in pamphlet form, individually published between 1770 and 1808. Bound together by the printer P Byrne of Dublin around 1808.

Part-leather binding with marbled boards.

The selection of these pamphlets for binding together, has been attributed to Hannah More (1745 – 1833), an English religious writer and philanthropist, remembered as a poet and playwright in the circle of Johnson, Reynolds and Garrick, known as a writer on moral and religious subjects, and as a practical philanthropist.

Titles of the various pamphlets:

'Thoughts on the Manners of the Great'. 84 pages.
'Strange and Remarkable Prophecies and Predictions' - James Usher. 16 pages, 1770.
'Thoughts on the Importance of Religion' - Attributed, by a pencil annotation, to William Allen. 15 pages, 1808.
'Early Christian Instruction in the Form of a Dialogue between a Mother and a Child'. Written at the Desire of The Society of Friends. 24 pages, 1807.
'A Letter to the Children and Youth of the Society of Friends'. 16 pages, 1806.
'A Letter to Parents and Others who have the Care of Youth in the Society of Friends.' - Frederick Smith. Second Edition, 16 pages, 1806.
' Remarks on the Prevailing Custom of Attending Stage Entertainments, also on the Present Taste for Reading Romances and Novels' - John Kendall. 31 pages,

Altogether a rare and fascinating anthology of different ideas.

The part-leather covers are badly worn, with a split along the spine, the front board being partially detached. The spine strip is worn, with part missing and the corners are badly rubbed. However the internal pages are generally in a clean and sound condition and the binding seems sound.

There is a hand-written contents list at the front of the volume.
