'On the literary and artistic landscape of the 1930's the Group Theatre is a feature of outstanding importance. Robert Medley, the distinguished painter and designer, and a close friend of Rupert Donne, played a vital part in the creation and history of the Group Theatre, which under Donne;s direction, staged virtually all the new verse plays that emerged from this most exciting decade of the century. Amongst those were: Sweeny Agonistes by T. S. Eliiot: The dance of death, The Dog Beneath the Skin, The Ascent of F6 by Auden and Isherwood; MacNeice's Out of the Picture and Spenders trial of a judge. For most of these plays the young Benjamin Britten wrote the music.'
