Handbook of Astronomy: Vol III The Starry Heavens - George F. Chambers F.R.A.S.

Clarendon Press series. Fourth edition 1890.
A Handbook of Descriptive and Practical Astronomy.
Robust blue buckram with no dust jacket. The board faces are bright and moderately scuffed to front and back, with no titles. The spine is sun-darkened, with gold titles. There are six small tears to the hinge lines, corresponding with the staple positions, tips frayed, several inexplicable tears to the spine covering around the middle, and a few strange scuff marks.

The publisher's mark of Henry Frowde (OUP grandee). Frontispiece image of Cassiopeia, with tissue guard. The title page offers six lines of Chambers' pedigree: Temple barrister, author of various non-astronomical books. Biblical quote, engraving of Hipparchus. The book promises much!

The book is strongly bound but the planing is not perfect, notably to p ix. p xiii appears to have suffered a similar gaff and has been clumsily torn open by a frustrated reader. There is a gaping gutter. Several learned pencil marks and underlining through the volume. Top edges in nice antique gilt; other edges trimmed with the same blunt plane as p xiii. There is cracking around p 129.
Overall this grand book is rather let down by its binding: apart from the aforementioned defects there is crinkling beyond p 320 and more cracking. All pages tanned.

A grand old relic from the days of country gentlemen playing at astronomy.
