'It is still very appropriate to copy the first words of the introduction to this book's predecessor - the history of our great movement from its beginning until that book's completion in 1978. Just as that was, this book is quite a remarkable achievement. It does not, in this case, stem from a unique combination of ability and experience gained through 40 years of serving Rotary and Rotarians from the inside of the Secretariat. The author has been near to, or at the head of,the organisation for just a short period of some 8 years. That period of time spent both looking in at the administration and looking around at the Rotary community of which we are all a part. That, of itself, means there is a continuation of style set out in that earlier history under the authorship of Roger Levy in there being so little opportunity to identify any really sensational disclosures or events of secretive intrigue. There is though a proper continuation and correct recall of the unique social experiment being carried through across the length and breadth of all the Rotary Districts forming the whole of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland. The personalities who cross the pages do cast a long shadow. Through them the pages are brought alive for those who want to dip in to just a few pages or to trace the whole history to present day. As in the details shown in the history of the previous 75 years, there is much that will pass unmentioned even though it was of significance at the time. Not because there is no room to include all matters, but because, through the ongoing changes which determine views and opinions, yesterday's moot issues become the norm of today. History is frequently a measure of events and of moments which, whilst unrecorded, have greater impact on change and direction than all the contents of record and minute books. Fortunately the longevity of many who have served the cause of Rotary in RIBI have been able to add their personal and well remembered snapshots of fact, fun and friendship for periods of time.'
