This is a wooden 'guardian figure' from Jajarkot District, West Nepal, vintage-possibly early 20th century. For many centuries orthodox religious influences in this area combined with shamanism and resulted in very characteristic art forms, such as this figure. They were used in religious worship and for protection.
This figure is simple, very striking and very powerful. It is beautifully weathered and shows signs of ageing as to be expected. The left leg has fractured at some point and has been repaired using a nail to hold it in place. The figure is approximately 47 cm tall, 16 cm wide and 12 cm deep. It weighs 1.9 kg.
The figure appears in the online catalogue of 'Woolley & Wallis', 21 February 2018, Lot 507, when it was offered as one of a group of three figures of this type.
This really is a most striking piece of art.
