With an engraved title page and dozens of illustrations by Christoph Schweitzer.
John Speed is renowned as one of England's leading historians, and is considered one of the best-known English cartographers of the early modern period. Following the encouragement of British antiquarian and historian William Camden, Speed began this work, first published in 1611 as "Historie of Great Britaine".

Many of the historical sources used for the work remain unknown, although they include the work of cartographers Christopher Saxton and John Norden. The play is considered a continuation of The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine, first published between 1611 and 1612, which contains the first series of maps of the individual counties of England and Wales.

Speed himself considered his History of Great Britain his main work, most of which was financed by Sir Fulke Grevillean, an Elizabethan poet, playwright and statesman. The work offers a very detailed summary of early English history.

Among others, the work offers detailed information on early successors and founders of English institutions including the Saxons, Henry VIII and Edward IV. Written by one of the most influential historians and cartographers of the early modern age, this extremely rare 1650 edition of The History of Great Britaine is a significant work of English historical and literary nonfiction.
