DIRIGO Trade Mark - Sherman, Seattle, USA ships gimbal compass in mahogany box. The gimbals allow it to swing freely in all directions and remain horizontal, the dial has cardinal points in block letters with an ornate 'fleur-de-lis' symbol for North. The outer edge of the dial is calibrated 0-360 degrees and has the 'Dirigo' trademark at North and Sherman's name at South. Dirigo, in Latin meaning "I Guide" or "I Direct", is the trade name of the Dirigo Compass Company, which was established in the Seattle, Washington area in 1907. They have supplied compasses to commercial fleets and yacht owners of the world. Eugene M. Sherman started his compass manufacturing business in Lexington, Massachusetts in the early 1900s.
