Mainline history: The locomotives of the Series 1600 f the NS were built by the firm Alstom. In the period between 1981 and 1983, 58 of these locomotives were delivered to the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS). The Series 1600 locomotives replaced the old locomotives of the series 1000 and 1500, which were decommissioned. The locomotives of the Series 1600 were deployed for both passenger and freight transport. In 1997, after the unbundling of the NS into NS Reizigers (Passenger services) and NS Cargo, the locomotives were shared between the two divisions. NS Reizigers received 21 units which were renumbered to the Series 1800. The other 37 locomotives went to NS Cargo and retained their Company Numbers from the 1600 series. Some of these locomotives have since been decommissioned. 43275421
