In addition there are numerous grape vines and “fichi d’India” or prickly pears, “mela cotogna” or quince, “cacchi” or persimon.
The Farmhouse comes with a large plot of land measuring 3.4 hectares or approximately 8½ acres and has 500+ olive trees.
The olive trees are of the “Itrana” variety which is unique to this specific area. Indeed the surrounding undulating hillsides of Itri are tinted with the silvery green foliage of such olive trees and Itri has been noted for the quality of its olives since Roman times. Itrana olives can be pressed to make olive oil or harvested as table olives, which are more often known as “Gaeta” olives, or “Olive di Gaeta”. Itri olive oil, produced solely from the “Itrana” variety of olive, is noted for being of consistently high quality as it is exceptionally low in acidity, in fact often below the 0.4% threshold for “Superior Extra Virgin Olive Oil”, which is far below the 0.8% international standard required to be categorised as “Extra Virgin Olive Oil”. Since this particular variety of olive is unique to this region of South Lazio and not grown anywhere else in the world it is truly unique amongst Extra Virgin Olive Oils. We have normally chosen to harvest our olives early in the season in November / December. By November the “Itrana” olives have grown round and plump and are gradually turning from bright green to dappled pink. The resulting flavoursome green extra virgin olive oil is so good. The oil is of exceptional quality. We chose to get our oil evaluated by an expert connoisseur who sampled and described it: It has a distinctive vibrant olive hue with an aroma of newly picked culinary herbs, a lush velvety fruity taste with a slight spicy kick of pepper. It is a delicate to medium intensity oil with a sweet character with a sweet character and a very well balanced bitterness and pepperiness. It’s ideal for dipping, marinating, preparing salad dressings, and finishing dishes by drizzling over grilled fish, meat and vegetables to enhance flavours, without masking its own delectable characteristic taste.
