Appearing in the 1933 Ercol catalogue this set, based on details of a William & Mary period design, includes a sofa (Model 764) with 2 fireside chairs all having infilled sides and featuring embossed and latticed leather shown on the back of the fireside chair Model 793. This set may well have been made as a special order or was shown in a later catalogue that is no longer available as the sofa is labelled “ERCOL Reliability Mark – Please Quote Design No. 1364”.#
We have never seen another set, or even a chair, in this Ercol design and consider it to be an extremely rare collectors’ piece.
Described by Ercol as being “covered in cowhide, enriched with embossings”, the front of the seats have an embossed leather frieze of vine leaves and grapes above latticed or woven leather back rests and infill below the wooden arms, with feather filled back cushions and replacement foam filled seat cushions.
The heavy frames are stained beech with the backs of all 3 pieces covered in LIOE Rexine.
More photos are available on the Retrovia website including one showing signs of wear and some tears to the Rexine.
Overall, condition is good for age but is not perfect - one chair seat slat needs replacing and the set has been priced accordingly.
