UK Puts Secondhand Shopping First
The cash-savvy UK put secondhand shopping first in their BILLIONS during 2013, according to the country's largest independent buying and selling website, www.preloved.co.uk. Norwich in Norfolk was also crowned the Secondhand Capital of the UK last year!
Preloved has just released an infographic celebrating the UK's money-saving obsession with secondhand buying and selling in 2013, which reveals:
- £1.6 billion – the estimated total value of items advertised on Preloved during the year
- 1.1 billion page views for adverts
- 2.4 million adverts placed by members of the website
- 12.3 million message sent between adverts and buyers to seal deals
The city named as the Secondhand Capital of the UK was Norwich – Preloved had more visits per resident from Norwich than any other town in the UK throughout 2013, with 1.9 million visits from Norfolk's capital. Mobile homes, furniture and fashion all featured highly in searches of the site made by people from Norwich.
Across the UK, canny residents hunted for a wide range of bargains on Preloved, with the top search words in 2013 including: 'sofa', 'iPhone', 'Mulberry', 'wardrobe' and 'motorhome'. The advert that gained the most views in the year was a 1986 Yamaha YX250 motorbike, which was viewed by 17,000 potential buyers.
The most popular day for some secondhand shopping was Sunday, and 9pm was the website's busiest time with over 100 pages viewed by bargain hunters every second.
Visitors looking for vintage secondhand finds headed to Preloved's unique Time Machine search facility that allowed them to seek out items from different decades. The most popular decade with the most frequent searches was the 1960s, closely followed by the 1970s and 1950s.
Ian Buzer, Managing Director of Preloved, said, "Our infographic illustrates how the UK no longer views buying and selling secondhand as second best. Secondhand is now accepted as a brilliant way to save cash, make some extra money by selling things no longer needed, and it's great for recycling to prevent landfill."
