Royal Engineers Steamer Chest made from an old ammunition box marked Capt. 12 I E W T Sandes RE. Research indicates the owner of this box was Edward Warren Caull Sandes born 1880 who was made a Captain of the Royal Engineers in 1908. He rose to the rank of Lt Col and retired in 1930 but helped with WWII as a consultant. His awards included DSO, MC and OBE. He was the author of a book Military Engineer in India and was renowned for his service in the Indian Army with the Bengal Sappers. He served in the Sudan and was much travelled. This item has been professionally valued.
