This production set in 1957, is produced by Emma Rice of the Globe Theatre fame has been extremely controversial and has had mixed reviews.
Alex Otterburn was an outrageously camp Pluto, complete with kinky devil's outfit and tail.
The underworld where Eurydice went was a seedy soho peep show with dirty old men in raincoats, with a Paul Raymond Revue bar set for the famous Can Can number, with drag artistes in sequine evening dresses worthy of Lily Savage.
All in all, a mixture of Campari and Soda, and Rodgers and Hammerstein Oklahoma touch and will not be to everyones' tastes, not least for the treatment of the overture.
The orchestral playing by the English National Opera orchestra was good, conducted by Sian Edwards, along with the singing with Mary Bevan as Eurydice, Ed Lyons as Orpheus, Licia Lucas as Public Opinion (the first transgender singer at ENO), Willard White and Robert Hayward as Jupiter and Anne-Marie Owens as Juno, which was sung in English translation, along with the revised and in parts, totally rewritten spoken dialogue.
