The sets were modern along with the costumes.
There was interesting use of film and photo montage, including announcing each act with a blackboard and chalk.
The fire and water tests were done very well with fire film and floating in the water projected onto a frontal screen whilst Tamino and Pamina were suspended in the main centre behind, so that they looked as if they were floating in the water.
The orchestral playing by the English National Opera orchestra was excellent, conducted by Ben Gernon, along with the singing with Rupert Charlesworth as Tamino, Thoma Oliemans as Papageno, Brindley Sherratt as Sarastro, and Julia Bauer as the Queen of the Night, which was sung in English translation, along with the spoken dialogue.
