This performance received mixed reviews and there was criticism of the sets in particular.

The sets were minimalist, but effective in this symbolist interpretation of this one act opera by Richard Strauss, full of dream like music with influences of Siegried and possibly in the Dance of the Seven Veils and other orchestral interludes, Sampson and Delilah and Pelleas and Melisande, written at around the same time by Debussy.

The orchestral playing by the English National Opera London Coliseum orchestra conducted by Martyn Brabbins was excellent, along with Allison Cook as Salome who was making her English National Opera London Coliseum debut.

The singing was sung in English translation.
