This performance has received excellent reviews both for the ballet performance and the sets which were the original 1946 Oliver Messel design sets, although they have been replicated.
The palace scene had a high curtain throne with tassels and also red drapes at the top of the scene.
These were interesting as they appeared with rather flat folds, but may appear to some to be somewhat dated now, as they were overtly theatrical which might not connect to modern audiences.
All rather surreal with echoes of Blue Skies, a famous film released that year.
The costumes were also very rich and exuberant with Puss in Boots, the Bluebird, and little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, and also the King in 17th Century heavy periwig and crown and the Queen splendidly attired, and Carabosse was similar to the Walt Disney version, and were also the 1946 designs although they have been replicated.
The orchestral playing by the Royal Opera House orchestra was excellent, and is conducted by Simon Hewitt and Tom Seligman, along with the dancing, including Gary Avis as King Forestan, Chistina Arestis as the Queen, Akane Takada as Princess Aurora, Vadim Muntagirov and Ryoichi Hirano as Prince Florimund, Erico Montes as Catalabutte Master of Ceremonies, and Itziar Mendizabel as the Lilac Fairy.
