Advert Description

Pair (2) Antique Victorian/ British Art Nouveau EPNS silver plate square candle holders/dishes/plates. Pressed repousse heart or ivy leaf design and fluted edges.

Very good used condition. Date c1890-1910s. Rare example of British Art Nouveau.

Some age-related wear/tarnish to the EPNS silver plating & a few light surface scratches.

Square shape with beautiful pressed repousse stylised heart or ivy leaf in each corner, a circular indented section in the centre (for the candle) & crimped/fluted design edges.

The Victorian meaning attached to the ivy & its flowers are friendship & affection as well as wedded love & fidelity, so the combined heart/leaf style decoration would be in-keeping with them originally being given as a wedding gift to a relative in the 1890s.

Most likely originally used for pillar candles on window sills, tables or bedside/dressing tables as the reflective surface amplifies the candlelight. Could be used with modern pillar candles, tea lights or votive style candles if placed on a heatproof surface.

Lovely original patina. Shiny plated top, matt base.

Bases have patina & wear with "EPNS" stamped on indented circular candle holder section.

Each measures approx 14.5cm wide, 14.5cm long, 1.2cm deep. Centre indent approx 5cm diameter.

Probably a rare surviving example of their type.

Provenance: belonged to a relative.

Please check the photos carefully as they are of the pair of candle plates/holders you are buying, as shown.
