Advert Description
Large antique leopard skin dated 20 March 1940 measuring approximately 8ft 2in (2490mm) from tip of nose to end of tail (not including the felt surround), 5ft (1530mm) between the paws and 25 in (630mm) across the belly.
Unfortunately there is no taxidermist label but it has been mounted in the same style as the renowned company Van-Ingen & Van-Ingen of Mysore, India. It maybe Cuthbertsons. However, there is a n original owners label on the wooden base of the head (see last photo) which establishes provenance.
The label reads:
‘H. A. Tomkins Esq.
Oating P.O.
Jamguri T.E.
Leopard skin No7442
to be cured & mounted
Executed on 20th March 40’
Also written on the wood itself is ‘20th March 1940.
The fur is in superb soft condition and still retains a good sheen. There is some general wear and tear including a couple of repairs. Study the photos carefully as they form part of the description.
The paws have about half the claws left on.
The head has a superb snarling pose showing all the original teeth
This skin is dated 1940 therefore it is deemed an antique and does not require DEFRA or Cities paperwork to sell legally in the EU. It also does not breach any policies or user agreement and was not taken from the wild illegally as it was perfectly legal to hunt leopards and tigers until 1969.
