I believe this is a;
Totem Cap Badge "BRITISH RAILWAYS" North Eastern Region. Tangerine Enamel on Brass & with brass lettering.

A genuine nice badge made by J R Gaunt of London. Both fixing lugs intact on rear.

In expected used condition for an item of this age & nature. There are two very minor nicks to the top of the enamel on the top rim.
It looks like the original rail employee has also tried to scratch his name in the brass at the back.
