Advert Description

Dorsey Edwin Doniphan (1897-1955) studied at the Corcoran School of Art Washington DC and the Boston Museum Fine Art School, where he was a student of Edmund Tarbell. He was the winner of the Gold Medal for Life Study at the Corcoran School of Art circa. 1919. He lived in Washington during his art career as painter, illustrator, and teacher. He conducted an art school from his studio for several years.

His works are in several public buildings in Washington DC and West Virginia, as well as in various private collections in the USA.
Some work is at the Historical Society of Washington DC and the US Navy Department, where his portrait of Secretary of the Navy Curtis Dwight Wilbur is in the collection of Navy Secretary Portraits. His other works include paintings of the US Capitol and The National Archives Building in Washington DC.

This unique and historical watercolour portrait is mounted in its original wooden frame 31 x 37 inches (79cm x 94 cm). The painting itself is approx. 23 x 29 inches.
It shows Eisenhower in his 1944 Four Star General Uniform and was commissioned on behalf of the US Quartermaster Association. A written record is available describing its presentation in 1949 to a British Army unit (long since disbanded).

Eisenhower was Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe from 1943 to 1945 and was elected 34th president of the United States in 1953
