Advert Description

A Ladybird junior science book

A trip down memory lane and useful and fun instructions for an educator. Like many titles from Ladybird, it is inspiring stuff.
Written by F.E.Newing B.Sc. & R. Bowood and illustrated beautifully by Harry Wingfield they provided a series of fascinating experiments you could perform to illustrate scientific principles.

In this book Lights, Mirrors and Lenses the science of Light was the subject.

As with all of the Ladybird science books the experiments could be performed using materials easily found in the home. In this edition we are asked to find plasticine, a wooden rule, two lenses, a box and mirrors. The pinhole camera was introduced here too. Classic experiments. I wonder how many kids nowadays have spent hours on end messing with pinhole cameras and prisms?

As ever the illustrations are wonderful. Although at the time I didn't even give them a thought. Now though I can appreciate them and all the ladybird book covers can be bought as canvas prints. Do any covers stick in your mind?

Discussed in the book were shadows, periscopes, telescopes, lenses, light and it's composition, how it bends and can be split into the colours of the rainbow. All good stuff here for those budding physicists.

A great little book that transports us back to a time of when learning was king, yet fun.
