Advert Description

This is an 1852 Staffordshire smear-glazed stoneware jug made by Charles Meigh & Son and is decorated with figures emblematic of the four seasons.

Provenance:
In the 1940's/early 50's my late Grandmother was in service at Booth Hall, Altrincham and, on retiring, was offered, by the lady of the hall, any item she would like to choose, as a remembrance of her time in service there. Shortly after she chose this item the lady's Sons appeared at my Grandmother's house demanding the return of it. My Father, who happened to be at his Mother's house at the time, had an argument with them and told them to leave, which they eventually did, minus the jug! My Father then took charge of the jug and my Grandmother sadly died shortly afterwards. Since the 1950's this has been literally under wraps in a vault. As a small child I remember many conversations regarding this jug, including correspondence with The British Museum, who did, many, many years ago, offer to buy this from my Father for a four-figure sum. As my Father was not short of money at the time he decided to hold onto it for future investment. I have subsequently inherited it. I made contact with The British Museum who informed me that, whilst they do not have this particular item, they have a similar one, and so are no longer in a position to purchase it.

My children do not want it, as it will not fit in with their décor and, as I am not in good health I wish it to go to a good home where it will be enjoyed and looked after
