Brass and wood antique magnetic compass.

This is an antique magnetic compass that I picked up in an antique fair in France over 45 years ago and never really having any use for it.it's been a desk ornament for most of that time.
It does work and is a well-made quality product in brass and wood, but I have no idea what the wood is.
