Advert Description

Soay lambs/sheep available - ewes a range of ages - lambs to fully grown ewes/ or a starter flock available due to downsizing our flock. Please ignore the age listed on preloved, we have a range of ages available depending on what you’d like.

Soay are unlike any other breed of sheep, being the most primitive breed with very varied characteristics, plus a history that evokes a romanticism back to the Bronze Age.

Looking more like mountain goats with their curled horns and brown/ mouflon coats ,they are intelligent, nimble animals with excellent mothering habits, with quirky behavioural traits and are lots of fun to watch.

They are excellent conservation grazers, being content in woodland and on hillsides and will eat the thistles and docks left behind by horses. The coloured fleece is sought after for many craft uses and their carcass produces lean meat of a delicious flavour fetching premium prices for the gourmet trade.

The long history of Soays on the stormy north Atlantic islands of St. Kilda, Scotland, has given them a robust hardiness unknown to most modern sheep. Their primitive gene pool retains disease-resistant and parasite-tolerant traits, while their hooves need minimal maintenance. Short, thin tails avoid fly-strike and do not need docking. Best of all, they don’t need shearing. Soay shed their wool naturally in summer after lambing.

All are pedigree and can be registered .
