Advert Description

This operator’s full title was Stalybridge, Hyde, Mossley and Dukinfield Joint Transport and Electricity Board, with the words “and Electricity” being dropped upon nationalisation of the power industry in 1947.

Even then, it still had the longest name of any municipal transport operator in the UK and was just referred to as the “Joint Board” by other operators in the area like Ashton-under-Lyne, Manchester, and Stockport Corporations plus the North Western Road Car Company.

Representing three Cheshire towns in its title, plus Mossley in Lancashire, SHMD chose dark green and cream for their fleet’s livery with the a lighter shade of green being introduced in the 1950s.

This splendid 1:76mm model of a wartime Daimler CWA6 vehicle with “Utility” bodywork (ie built without frills or elaborate styling), made a valuable contribution to public transport in the area during a time of rationing and hostilities. It has never been out of its box (see photos of a specimen).

In 1969, SHMD was absorbed into the South East Lancashire and North East Cheshire (SELNEC) Passenger Transport Executive, along with ten other municipal operators, and SHMD ceased to exist.
